Guinea Pigs with fleas - when do they stop scratching?

(01 Oct 2009)

Question

Hi, We brought our two guinea pigs to the vets last week and the vet took a skin scrape. It came back that they had a type of flea. I just have a question that we never asked the vet.
Basically I changed the bedding, got rid of the straw and hay which we had been using, and was wondering if its fine to put some straw and hay from a new batch in with them? Also I was wondering when should they stop scratching themselves... If you could give me anymore information it would be great. Look forward to hearing from you.

Response

Thank you for your mail regarding your guinea pigs. You can try putting a new batch of straw in now and see how you get on. The guinea pigs may need a course of those injections the vet gave the other day. Some clear up after one shot but most need another one, and sometimes 3 in total at weekly intervals. So if they are still scratching , then I would book an appt for another shot.
