With Halloween approaching, it is important to prepare early to try and reduce the stressful effects of the season. The animal experts at Cara Vet Group have drawn up some guidelines to help you and your pets enjoy a fun festival.
1. Plug a D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) Diffuser or a Feliway Diffuser in the room that your dog or cat relaxes in. These diffusers contain calming pheromones which are clinically proven to help highly strung or anxious pets. Keep it plugged in continuously and make sure it is not switched on and off. D.A.P. collars are also available for dogs.
2. Play a Fireworks CD to help desensitise your pet to the various whizzes, bangs and screeches. Pets become desensitised to sounds that are loud, unusual and potentially frightening. It is advised that you begin this sound therapy a number of weeks before Halloween.
3. Start your pet on KalmAid if they are anxious. It is a caramel flavoured, natural product that promotes the natural release of serotonin. This has been proven to help promote a sense of calm in dogs and cats. It can also be used to help manage long-term behavioural problems.
