Is it dangerous to play rough with a cat?

(02 Sep 2009)

Question

My boyfriend and his daughter both play very rough with their cat. They very frequently "play" by pounding on the cat, rapidly whacking the cat on both sides of his body rhythmically, as hard as you might beat a rug or pound a drum. The cat seems to like this--at least he doesn't leave while they're doing it. But I worry about his internal organs being damaged as this happens so frequently. Is there really any reason to be concerned?

Response

As there is potential for accidental injury, we would not advise very rough play with any cat. Also this type of rough play will encourage play-biting and could turn petting time into wrestling time, encouraging unwanted behaviour.
