Puppy won't eat

(18 Aug 2009)

Question

My puppy has gone off all dog food in the past 4 days he will only eat chicken steak, ham and cheese....he has all his injections...

Response

Thank you for your email regarding your new puppy. Puppies are clever little creatures and learn very quickly how to get what they want! You need to make sure your puppy is not unwell. So providing there is no vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy then it sounds like your pup is playing you a bit!

You need to start from scratch with feeding your pup. Firstly, you need to stop feeding chicken, ham etc as it is not balanced on its own for growing dogs. You need to feed a complete food like Hills Puppy Mini bite. This is a complete dried food that meets all your growing puppy's nutritional requirements.

You put out the necessary amount at feeding time, if your pup does not eat it in 10 mins minutes, then you remove it. Then place the food out again at the next feeding time, and if not eaten, then you remove it again and so on. Your puppy will soon learn to eat what you chose. Please dont feed other foods in between meal times and rest assured your puppy WILL eat when it is hungry.
