Jenny Hickey RVN Registered Veterinary Nurse

Meet Jenny Hickey!

What is your job title in Cara Vets?

I am a Registered Veterinary Nurse here in Cara Vet Group.

What made you want to be part of the veterinary world?

I always loved animals and thought I'd like to work in veterinary as a kid. When I was 8 years old, I helped my friend's dog when she was choking on a bone... and there was no doubt in my mind then.

When did you join Cara Vets?

2014

What do you do?

I assist the Vet with surgeries, look after and medicate in-patients, lab work, x-rays and Nurse Clinics.

Any qualifications / achievements?

I gained a Level 6 FETAC Award in Animal Care from Killester College before attending AIT to study Veterinary Nursing. I qualified in 2007 as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

What do you love about your job?

It's a very interesting job - you never know what's going to come in. It's so rewarding watching your patient going home and feeling better.

Who is one of your most memorable patients and why?

Syd rescued a beautiful bulldog. We called him Ultan. He had so many problems and needed 2 surgeries but he made a full recovery and was rehomed to a lovely client of ours. He was such a cheeky chap and would sit at the Staff-Room table during lunch to beg for food.

Your pets' names and breeds?

How did you meet your pets?

  • Neo was the last kitten out a litter brought into us for rehoming. He didn't like being alone in the kennel so I took him home for the night. He is still with us 2 years later!
  • Benjemin was handed into the last practice where I worked and I just fell in love with him. He was such a chilled cat. He got on with my dog so he came to live with us.

When did your pet come to live with you?

  • Neo: 2016
  • Benjemin: 2012

Any funny quirks / lazy / energetic things they do?

  • Benjemin loves to find warm and cosy places to sleep and is a glutten for food. He likes to visit my neighbours for to be pampered. Everyone knows him.
  • Neo doesn't know he's a cat. He is best friends with my neighbour's Jack Russell (puppy) and they love to play-wrestle.
