Microchipping: What You Need to Know
- It’s the law (dogs): All dogs in Ireland (including puppies) must be microchipped, registered and certified. Owners who refuse can face fines of up to €5,000.
- Quick & safe: About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades - no anaesthetic needed and similar to a routine vaccination.
- Unique & permanent: The chip carries a unique 15-digit number. We register your details so your pet can be reunited with you if they’re ever lost.
- Scannable anywhere: Vets, local authorities and animal welfare groups use scanners to read the chip and access your registered contact details.
Price at Cara Vets: Microchipping costs €55. It’s FREE when you join our Pet Healthcare Plan.
How Microchipping Works
- Consult & scan: We examine your pet and check for an existing chip.
- Insert chip: A sterile, single-use needle places the chip just under the skin.
- Register details: We register your contact details on an approved database (required for legal compliance).
- Confirm & update: You’ll receive confirmation; please keep your details up to date if you move or change phone.

FAQs: Pet Microchipping
Does microchipping hurt?
No anaesthetic is required. Most pets react similarly to a standard vaccination.
How long does a microchip last?
For life. The body forms a tiny protein layer around it to hold it in place. There’s no battery and no moving parts.
Is it safe?
Yes. Microchips are inert and biocompatible; adverse reactions are very rare.
At what age can my pet be microchipped?
Puppies and kittens can be microchipped from a young age. Your vet will advise the best timing for your pet.
Is it compulsory for cats?
It’s not currently compulsory in Ireland, but we strongly recommend it so your cat can be reunited with you if they go missing.
How do authorities trace me if my pet is found?
Vets, local authorities and welfare groups scan the chip and contact the registered database to obtain your details. That’s why keeping your registration updated is essential.
