Common Signs of Dental Disease in Pets

The following are the most frequent symptoms of dental disease in dogs and cats. If your pet shows one or more of these, a veterinary dental check-up is strongly advised:

  • Bad breath – often the first sign of gum infection or tartar build-up
  • Yellow or brown plaque on the teeth near the gumline
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums (gingivitis)
  • Pain or bleeding when eating
  • Decreased appetite or dropping food
  • Loose, broken or missing teeth
  • Pawing at the mouth or reluctance to chew hard foods
  • Behavioural changes such as depression, irritability or hiding

Left untreated, oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart, kidneys and other organs. Early detection through regular check-ups can prevent serious illness and discomfort.

How We Help

Our vets use digital dental radiography and advanced cleaning equipment to diagnose and treat dental disease safely and effectively. Regular professional cleanings and at-home care are key to maintaining your pet’s oral health.
