Common Signs of Dental Disease in Pets
The following are the most frequent symptoms of dental disease in dogs and cats. If your pet shows one or more of these, a veterinary dental check-up is strongly advised:
- Bad breath – often the first sign of gum infection or tartar build-up
- Yellow or brown plaque on the teeth near the gumline
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums (gingivitis)
- Pain or bleeding when eating
- Decreased appetite or dropping food
- Loose, broken or missing teeth
- Pawing at the mouth or reluctance to chew hard foods
- Behavioural changes such as depression, irritability or hiding
Left untreated, oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart, kidneys and other organs. Early detection through regular check-ups can prevent serious illness and discomfort.
