Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy for Pets

At Cara Vet Group, we are delighted to offer cryotherapy (cryosurgery) as a safe, simple and effective way to treat many common growths and skin problems in dogs and cats.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive technique that uses extreme cold to remove abnormal or diseased tissue. It’s a gentle alternative to traditional surgery and is especially helpful for older pets or those with medical conditions where anaesthetic or surgery may be risky.

Conditions We Can Treat with Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is highly effective for treating:

  • Skin tags and warts
  • Infected or itchy skin lesions
  • Cysts
  • Cancerous or pre-cancerous skin tumours
  • Growths on the eyelids, around the mouth, nose or perianal area

Why Choose Cryotherapy?

  • Quick and simple - most procedures are done in a single visit
  • Minimal discomfort - usually no general anaesthetic required
  • Fast Recovery - No long healing periods like with surgery
  • Safe for older pets - Ideal when surgery may not be an option
  • Proven results - lumps typically fall off within days

Real Results

One of our patients, Mia, had a lump successfully treated with cryotherapy:

  • Before: Noticeable lump on the mouth (see 1st 2 images)
  • Immediately after treatment: lump frozen (see 3rd image)
  • 4 days later: lump had fallen off naturally (see 4th & 5th image)

Frequently Asked Questions about Cryotherapy

Does cryotherapy hurt my pet?

Most pets tolerate cryotherapy very well. The treatment feels cold and may cause brief mild discomfort, but it is far less invasive than surgery. In most cases, general anaesthetic is not required.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery is very quick. Lumps or growths usually fall off naturally within a few days to a week. Your pet can return to normal activities almost straight away.

Is it safe for older pets?

Yes. Cryotherapy is an excellent option for senior pets or those with health conditions that make traditional surgery or anaesthetics too risky.

What type of lumps can be treated?

Cryotherapy works well for skin tags, warts, cysts, eyelid growths, perianal growths, and even some cancerous skin tumours. Your vet will advise if your pet’s lump is suitable for treatment.

Will the lump come back?

In most cases the treated tissue does not return. However some pets may develop new lumps over time, and these can be treated as needed.

How long does the procedure take?

Most cryotherapy treatments take only a few minutes and can be done during a standard appointment.
