Erosive Lesions

Erosive Lesions (Tooth Resorption) in Cats — Symptoms & Treatment

Is your cat drooling, eating less, or pawing at their mouth? They may be suffering from erosive lesions, also known as tooth resorption — a painful condition where the tooth structure breaks down from the inside out.

At Cara Veterinary Group, we diagnose and treat cat dental erosion using digital X-rays and professional dental care at our clinics in Dublin 15 (Ballycoolin) and Dublin 7 (Phoenix Park Gate).

What Are Erosive Lesions in Cats?

Erosive lesions, or Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL), occur when cells in the tooth (odontoclasts) begin to eat away at the enamel and dentin. This exposes sensitive nerves, causing severe pain and inflammation.

The condition often affects the lower premolars but can occur on any tooth — and it’s far more common than many owners realise.

Why Early Detection Matters

These lesions usually aren’t visible until tartar is removed during a dental cleaning. Without dental X-rays, even experienced vets can miss them. Once detected, the damaged part of the tooth must be removed to relieve pain and prevent infection.

Common Signs of Erosive Lesions

  • Drooling or reluctance to eat dry food
  • Jaw trembling while eating
  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding or inflamed gums
  • Grinding teeth or sudden yelps when eating
  • Weight loss or lethargy

Treatment Options at Cara Vets

Our team uses digital dental radiography to determine the extent of resorption. Depending on the findings:

  • Crown amputation is performed if roots are being naturally absorbed by the jaw bone.
  • Full tooth extraction is required if the roots remain painful or infected.

Both procedures are performed under anaesthesia to ensure your cat is comfortable and pain-free. Post-operative pain relief and home-care guidance are always provided.

Preventing Future Dental Problems

Although erosive lesions cannot be completely prevented, you can reduce risk by scheduling annual dental check-ups, maintaining good oral hygiene and feeding dental-friendly diets. Our Pet Healthcare Plan offers discounts on dental cleaning, X-rays and other preventative treatments, helping you save on essential pet care while keeping your cat healthy.
