Six Simple Steps to Maintain Healthy Teeth and Gums

  1. Feed a balanced diet and minimise food deposits
Food left on the teeth causes plaque, which hardens into tartar and leads to gum disease. Feeding structured meals once or twice daily helps prevent constant residue build-up.
  2. Remove uneaten food after 10 minutes
Avoid free-feeding or “picking” throughout the day. Allowing constant access to food keeps bacteria active and promotes decay.
  3. Brush your pet’s teeth regularly
This is the best way to prevent plaque and gingivitis. Use a pet toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste — never human toothpaste, as it can upset your pet’s stomach.
  4. Encourage chewing
Provide safe chew toys, dental chews, or hard-textured food to help mechanically clean teeth and massage gums.
  5. Watch for warning signs
Bad breath, red gums, drooling, or pawing at the mouth are red flags. See our guide: Signs & Symptoms of Dental Disease.
  6. Schedule regular dental exams
Annual vet dental checks and dental X-rays help detect hidden problems early. Professional scaling and polishing remove stubborn tartar safely.

Why Dental Care Matters

Dental disease affects over 80% of adult pets. Bacteria from untreated gums can spread to the heart, kidneys and liver. Preventative care helps your pet live longer, healthier and happier.
