Endocrinology
Veterinary Endocrinology - Hormone & Metabolic Disorders in Pets
Veterinary endocrinology diagnoses and treats hormone disorders in pets - most commonly diabetes, Cushing’s and Addison’s disease, and thyroid problems. These conditions affect metabolism, weight, energy and organ function. With timely testing and tailored medication, most dogs and cats can live comfortably and safely long-term.
At Cara Veterinary Group (Dublin 15 & Dublin 7) we provide complete care for endocrine (hormonal) diseases in dogs and cats — combining in-house blood/urine testing with ultrasound where needed and personalised long-term plans. We commonly manage Diabetes Mellitus, Adrenal disease (Cushing’s/Addison’s), and Thyroid disorders, helping pets maintain stable hormone levels and excellent quality of life.

What Is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the study of hormones and the glands that produce them. Hormones regulate vital body functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and stress response. When the endocrine system is imbalanced, your pet can develop serious health problems, but many can be managed effectively with modern veterinary care.
Common Hormonal Diseases in Pets
Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot use insulin properly. It leads to high blood sugar, excessive thirst, and weight loss. With proper treatment, diabetic pets can live full and happy lives. Learn more about Diabetes in Pets
Adrenal Disease
The adrenal glands sit near the kidneys and produce steroid hormones that regulate stress, salt balance, and metabolism. Disorders include Cushing’s disease (too much cortisol) and Addison’s disease (too little cortisol). Learn more about Adrenal Disease
Thyroid Disease
Thyroid problems are common in middle-aged and older pets. Cats often develop hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), while dogs more commonly have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Both can be managed with medication and regular blood tests. Learn more about Thyroid Disease
